Hello Friends…
Welcome to my new gardening blog, Greenfellas4You…
Learn as you Grow!
A little about myself first…
My name is Ruchi Airen, and I’m a food blogger @Foodfellas4You.com and based in Long Island NY.
I’ve always been interested in garden to table food…so growing my own vegetables and fruits seemed to be a natural extension to that.
So last year in pursuit of growing my own, I set up a small kitchen garden in my backyard with raised cedar beds.
Grew my plants from seed…
And set out on my new adventure!
As I slowly felt my way through the process…I experimented with growing different vegetables and greens with varying degree of success.
Some of the things I grew were…
Spinach
Arugula
Amaranth
Radish
Turnip
Tomatoes
Cucumbers
Eggplants
Bottle gourd
Bitter gourd
Peppers
Assorted Herbs
Sharing some pictures, of last year’s produce…
Most of my vegetables did well, especially my tomatoes, cucumbers and salad greens
We tried cooking green tomatoes…absolutely delicious!
And when the tomatoes ripened…
We enjoyed them raw
Made tangy tomato rasam and chutney…
We had so many tomatoes, we even froze some for winter!
Salad greens were the easiest!
With minimal effort, we could enjoy loads of organic greens at a fraction of the supermarket prices!
Arugula grew profusely…
It’s wonderful as a peppery salad, but we tried cooking it with pasta …Mmm!
However, I made the mistake of starting late. This shortened the growing season and so I could only enjoy limited yield of vegetables like bottle gourd, bittergourd, peppers and eggplants!
Growing Amaranth (Lal Bhaaji) was a grand success!
I even harvested a whole lot of seeds…
And used the beautiful flowers to decorate my house!
My turnip and radish plants bolted, as it got too warm, but nevertheless we enjoyed their greens!
There were many other hits and misses along the way…that all went into a wonderful learning experience!
This year, I’m back with even more enthusiasm, determined to keep moving onwards in my path towards growing my own!
So come join me as we navigate a whole new season of growing delicious organic vegetables!
